Advanced Optronics, Inc (AO) designs & manufactures implantable, smart sensors to improve patient outcomes in a wide array of medical applications for more minimally invasive surgery. AO’s first product is an integrated force and position sensor for cochlear implants (CIs). These sensors provide real-time feedback to surgeons during CI surgery to reduce surgical trauma and avoid damage to residual hearing during implantation. The company is founded by experienced engineers and advised by surgeons and serial entrepreneurs with deep knowledge & expertise in medical device development.

AO’s PHI SBIR to the NSF is focused on “Enhancing surgeon tactile feedback during cochlear implantation to improve outcomes and expand eligibility.” AO’s first product is an integrated force and position sensor for cochlear implants (CIs). AO’s sensor integrates with the CI electrode to provide novel, real-time quantitative feedback. The surgeon can adjust the insertion technique to minimize insertion force and adverse surgical events such as tip fold over.
