Louisiana is honored to host the 2011 National Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Fall Conference from November 6th – 9th, 2011 in New Orleans, LA.  SBIR is a competitive federal government grant program that funds small businesses in developing innovative, high-risk technologies with the goal of increasing private sector commercialization into the marketplace.  It is a highly specialized form of funding for small firms to perform cutting-edge R&D that addresses the nation’s most critical scientific, engineering and technology needs.

This year we anticipate over 700+ attendees from a variety of federal agencies and numerous technology-based businesses that are or going to be involved with SBIR/STTR programs. Our conference theme is “Small Business Growth Through Technology: Innovate & Create.”  We will educate and connect small technology-based businesses, researchers and universities from all across the United States with the resources they will need to help them transform innovative ideas into new products or services and job growth.  We will cover many aspects of the federal SBIR/STTR programs such as getting started, intellectual property, financing, marketing and business planning.

Nearly $2.5 billion is available annually for awarding grants/contracts under this program.  SBIR enables small businesses to compete on the same level as larger companies, encouraging start-ups and growing economies in those states which actively support this critical program.  In addition, SBIR offers promising opportunities to socially and economically disadvantaged companies throughout the country.  In fact, small companies retain the intellectual property rights to technologies they develop under these programs.
